Women’s Hair Loss
While commonly associated with men, hair loss is also a very common aesthetic concern for women as well. In fact, over 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss at some point in their life, often caused by female-pattern hair loss (FPHL). The effects can range from hair thinning or shedding to patchiness or full-on total hair loss.
When discussing hair loss in women, there are generally three primary types of hair loss to consider:
- Androgenic Alopecia – Also known as female-pattern baldness, this condition occurs when the hair begins to noticeably thin on the scalp and crown of the head over time.
- Anagen Effluvium – A commonly temporary type of hair loss that is triggered by certain medications (including chemotherapy or radiation) that damages follicles and causes the hair to fall out.
- Telogen Effluvium – A typically temporary form of hair loss that can be caused by severe stress and occurs when a change in the hair growth cycle causes a large number of hairs to enter the resting phase at once, causing hair shedding and thinning.
Some of the most common factors that contribute to women’s hair loss include:
- High stress levels over time
- Significant weight loss or changes to your diet
- Chemical-based hair treatments or products
- Cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Certain health conditions including thyroid issues, anemia, and vitamin deficiencies
- Hormonal imbalances associated with menopause or pregnancy
- Certain medications and supplements (including some blood pressure medicines)
- Traction loss from tight hairstyles worn over long periods of time
- A family history of hair loss
In the case that a woman does experience hair loss, there are solutions available. We perform Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a unique hair transplant method that can help women regrow lost hair and resolve even severe hair loss issues. During the procedure, hair follicles are extracted from one part of the scalp and implanted into areas that are experiencing balding or thinning. We’ve had remarkable success performing FUE procedures on women of all ages over the years and the satisfaction rate from this treatment is extremely high.
