What Are The Most Common Types of Hair Loss?
Hair loss is an extremely common concern for both men and women, but one misconception that we would like to clear up is the idea of “hair loss” as a catch-all term. In fact, there are many different kinds of hair loss and they can all impact a person’s hair differently. As is always the case, a person’s hair loss issues cannot be properly addressed until the root cause of their specific issue is found. This is why the hair restoration experts here at KA Hair Aesthetics wanted to take a moment to discuss some of the most common types of hair loss.
Androgenic Alopecia
Androgenic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss for adults. Although some people know it as “male-pattern baldness”, the truth is that it is also common for women to experience this condition. This is a hereditary condition that causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop growing hair entirely. Although some people experience this as early as their teenage years, it typically begins later in life. As long as the patient has a good donor area, hair transplant surgery such as follicular unit extraction (FUE) can assist in improving the areas where hair has been lost.
Alopecia Areata
People who experience a new bald spot may have what is known as, Alopecia Areata form of hair loss where the body actually attacks the hair follicles. Unlike Androgenic Alopecia, Alopecia Areata is a temporary form of hair loss in most cases and the overwhelming majority with this condition will regrow lost hair over time. But it is important to be properly diagnosed and treated if you experience this type of hair loss.
Involutional Alopecia
Hair naturally grows in cycles, and these cycles include something known as a resting or “dormant” phase. Involutional Alopecia is a condition that occurs when a larger number of hair follicles go into this resting phase, leading to shorter and fewer fully grown hairs. This will ultimately lead to gradual thinning and eventually baldness over time.
Alopecia Universalis
Alopecia Universalis is what many people think of when hearing the term “alopecia.” People with this condition will lose their hair from all areas of the head and body. This includes the face, eyebrows, armpits, pubic hair, and more. Alopecia Universalis is an autoimmune disease that can be temporary in some cases and permanent in others.
While there are more types of hair loss that a person may develop, we thought these would be able to establish a good baseline of understanding. Our experts can help address many hair loss concerns by performing Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) transplant procedures.
