True or False: Follicular Unit Extraction
Over the years, our hair restoration experts have had incredible success with their Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures to help our patients regrow lost hair. In order to be satisfied with your FUE procedure and experience, it’s important to establish and maintain realistic expectations. That means understanding what it is capable of (and not capable of) helping patients achieve. That’s why our experts thought it would be helpful to provide clarity on a few true and false statements about Follicular Unit Extraction.
Scarring Is Incredibly Minimal Following Follicular Unit Extraction
This is true. Since no large portion of the scalp will need to be excised during an FUE, the scarring is very minimal. Especially when compared to Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and other hair transplant techniques. In fact, FUE patients will not experience any post-procedure scarring, other than tiny white dots where the follicles were removed. And even these will fade over time.
Recovery Is Simple After Undergoing Follicular Unit Extraction
This is true. Recovery after an FUE procedure is commonly brief and easy for patients. It’s common for patients to return to work and even moderate exercise within about a week. However, we will discuss in detail the timeframe for resuming normal hair care, as well as swimming, excessive sweating, and other more strenuous activity as it will be based on each individual and the extensiveness of their procedure.
My Follicular Unit Extraction Results Will Be Apparent Immediately
This is false. As with any procedure like this, the scalp and hair follicle will need time to heal. Additionally, the hair follicles that are grafted during the FUE procedure will need time to shed and begin to regrow anew. While some degree of new growth will likely be noticeable after three or four months, the final FUE results will take between five months and a year to really fill in since normal hair growth occurs in cycles throughout the year.
